Where Christ Directs Learning!
The Bethel Evangelical Secondary School was built in the mid-sixties at the request of the pastors and elders of the Bethel Evangelical Church centered in Dembi Dollo, Ethiopia. At that time, there was an elementary school called Brihane Yesus with grades one through six, but there was no High School . These church leaders and the Presbyterian missionaries who lived there envisioned a school with two streams: one an academic and the other vocational, both within a context of Christian Education. With these goals in mind, and with financial assistance from the United Presbyterian Church USA, these school planners set about and built a school of the finest quality.
The physical plant itself, constructed of cement blocks made on the site, with interior furnishings of local materials and all made by Mr Bill Deeter, Obbo Regassa and their crew of local workmen is a practical and beautiful facility.
The academic program followed closely the Ministry of Education curriculum. The vocational classes in wood and metal working, auto mechanics, home economics, agriculture and typing offered at different times those skills needed to enhance one's livelihood. Morning chapel programs, Bible studies in teachers' homes, Prayer and praise programs in the Dorms all provided ways in which teachers and students alike could grow in the knowledge of Jesus Christ. The motto at the school gate clearly states the guiding principle: BESS - Where Christ Directs Learning.(Source: linkngo.org)
